The aim of this study is to investigate and demonstrate the use of remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) techniques to create athematic assessment in order to locate a best dam site in Al-Tharthar basin northern Iraq. Automated derivation of multi thematic layers to describe the characteristics of the catchment was performedwith aid of several softwares (Erdas 9.1, Arc GIS 9.3, Global Mapper 11 and Surfer 9). Gathering all these data has to construct database of the catchment area to decide the locations of the proposed dams. Three locationswere chosen.Dam site one was chosen to be the best site since it is provide lesser length with more lake storage and has substantial of foundation material for dam construction.Furthermore, various calculation regarding the design of the dam, its parameters was investigated.

Multi temporal Landsat ETM+ satellite images for the period (1986 to 2009) are used to determine the boundary of Mosul Dam Lake. Digital Image processing (Enhancement, Image Fusion and classification) applied for the input data. The output images showed the values of surface area in Km2. In order to extract the level of water a digital elevation model was combined with the output images.
The (Elevation – Area – Volume) curve for Mosul Dam Lake (which depended on field measurements) used to compare the values of water level of the lake that extracted from the satellite images with digital elevation model and that one plotted on the curve. The results of this study showed an agreeable convergence between them.

Al-Rafidain Engineering Journal (AREJ), 2010, Volume 18, Issue 2, Pages 60-72
DOI: 10.33899/rengj.2010.28187

In this research, the standard precipitation index (SPI) was used to analyze rainfall records between 1941 - 2002 for nine metrological stations in the north of Iraq. In addition, digital maps of average drought magnitude and average drought intensity for the study region had drawn by using geographic information system (GIS). It is concluded that 56% of the study period were drought years.
