Professor Dawood is a member of the senior management team (Associate Dean for Research & Innovation, AD for R&I) at the School Computing, Engineering and Digital Technologies (SCEDT). This school was formed in 1st Oct 2019 following a restructuring at Teesside University to create ‘super schools’ and reduce the number of school at university. Previously he was Associate Dean for Research & Innovation at School of Science, Engineering & Design (SSED). As the AD for R&I, his main responsibilities are: creating a vibrant research culture; leading and growing research and innovation; contribute to the University's research strategic vision and mission; develop international collaboration; maintain a high quality of research impact, respond to local and national grand challenges (in particular decarbonisation of industrial sector, Digital City and Biologics). He is responsible for REF2021 submission of three big UoAs, Engineering, Design and Computing with 100 staff expecting to be returned. Prof. Dawood developed and operationalised school research strategy focusing on increase capacity and capabilities to deliver research projects and outputs. He developed ‘Industry Facing’ strategy within the school to enable research teams to develop solutions for industrial challenges: Decarbonisation, Digital Health, Smart Energy Systems and Transforming Construction. Operationalisation of the strategy was accomplished through alignment of the research base to local and national industry strategies to deliver applied research, research consultancy and knowledge transfer.
For the past four years, the university and schools have embraced a research transformational agenda in which research activities and outputs has been valued and is included as part of the academic workload of staff. The school’s KPIs (research income, PhD competition, international collaboration and research culture) have been improved year on year and most importantly our REF submission will be substantially increased from 13 FT staff in 2014 to 100 in 2021.
Prof. Dawood works closely with the PVC (Research and Innovation) at Teesside University (Prof Simon Hodgson) as he was part of PVC team to development of 5 years University strategy. The focus is on building excellence, and embrace substantial growth through investing in and developing talent, increasing international collaboration and implementing fair and transparent approaches to research evaluation. One of main pillars of the strategy is to create a diverse and vibrant research culture where potential is recognised, talent nurtured, integrity valued, and success rewarded and celebrated. Prof. Dawood is leading two major grand challenges at the university and working directly with PVC to develop advance digital technologies and Sustainable Engineering. These grand challenges are the drivers for research and innovations at the university and have contributed to substantial improvements of research culture and multi-disciplinary research themes.
Professor Dawood manages research budget for both internal and external funding. Total external budget is £1.3 million (spent) per year and internal allocation of QR and OH is around £500K (exclude PhDs studentships and Research fellows funding). He also manages professors and readers and staff with significant research workload and outputs at the school.
Professor Dawood has significant and long-standing experience of working with major industrial partners in the UK and Overseas to develop and apply research results as part of further collaborative projects. In particular, he is currently running international research and development projects in South Korea, Japan, Qatar, Europe and USA in the areas of 5D modelling, serious game engine technology application of digital technologies for energy efficient buildings. Furthermore, he is regularly invited to be a keynote presenter in international events.
With a substantial working experience in higher education in the UK, he has successfully secured and led international research projects; graduating more than 27 PhDs students; consultancy; business engagement, knowledge transfer partnership (10 KTPs successfully completed and currently running 2 KTPs). He generated more than £7 million in research grants from EU, Innovate UK, Qatar Foundation, British Council, EU FP6, EU FP7 and H2020.
Professor Nashwan Dawood’s research is focused on project construction management and the application of digital construction and processes and energy reduction in buildings. This has ranged across a number of research topics including BIM technologies and processes, sustainability, Information Technologies and Systems (5D, VR, Integrated databases). In addition hehas extensive experience of leading internationally recognised research work in BIM technology, digital construction/built-environment and processes and in the application of 5D modelling in construction processes, and has successfully generated peer reviewed funded projects from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the Technology Strategy Board, and EU H2020. His currently involved in 5 EU H2020 projects.
Professor Dawood has published over 220 research papers, and sits on the editorial board of a number of journals and conferences. His work has been recognized outside of the academic sphere, for example with its short-listing for the Constructing Excellence Innovation Award.
Having an exemplary record of accomplishments of international academic status, Prof Dawood demonstrates the ability to successfully lead multi-disciplinary research and enterprise projects. The quality of his research work is judged to be internationally leading. He has the privilege of being invited as a key note speaker for more than 10 leading international conferences and seminars around the world (including CIB W78, Qatar BIM, Association of Civil Engineering). He is currently the coordinator of H2020 DR-BoB ( Demand Response in Block of Buildings, total value 5M) and was the coordinator of EU FP7 IDEAS project (4 million Euro), Principal Investigator of Qatar Foundation project ($900K), three British Council projects with South Korea, Qatar University, and Russia, EPSRC iCASE with a major training and multimedia company (DDL) and seven KTP projects with Colour UD, Ryder Architect, SoTech, Hodgson Saywer, DKS Architect, Applied Integration and Unasys. He has successfully initiated CONVR (Construction applications in virtual reality conference) which has been running for the past 20 years at different international venues. CONVR 2019 will be held in November in Thailand. Moreover, prof. worked in the field on projects related to construction, structural, water resources, and transportation engineering in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, but he was always excited to work in transportation engineering projects. The ultimate reward for me as a transportation engineer is making direct improvements in the lives of other people while facilitating the efficient, safe, and convenient flow for all road users on our transportation network. This passion led him to dive deeper and get an MS and a Ph.D. in civil engineering/transportation engineering and then licensure as a professional engineer (PE) in the same domain.

Dr Eman Omairey joined the School of Computing, Engineering and Digital Technologies at Teesside University in June 2022 as a lecturer in Civil Engineering and became the MSc in Civil and Structural Engineering Course Leader in January 2023. Before that, she worked for nine months at Leeds Beckett University as a degree apprenticeship assessor in Civil and Building Services Engineering. She obtained her PhD in Highway Engineering from Aston University in 2021 under the supervision of Prof Yuqing Zhang. Her research contributions include: developing a Finite Element modelling framework to predict oxidative field ageing of asphalt pavements under Multiphysical environmental conditions using a time-dependent weak-form partial differential equations approach; experimental characterisation of anti-ageing modified bitumen using ageing-related kinetics; and feasibility of waste plastics for bitumen replacement using chemical and mechanical experimentation. Eman was awarded a full PhD grant from Schlumberger Foundation (2018-2021) and Newton fund (2018). She also has MSc and BSc in Civil Engineering and held several academic roles in this field.
Dr Omairey’s research interests lie in finding innovative solutions to incorporate modern technology into the pavement industry to create resilient, sustainable future roads. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), a graduate member of the Institute of Civil Engineers (GMICE) and a peer reviewer for several scientific journals.
